Science Olympiads 2027
Not one exam but a ladder: a qualifying round, a national Olympiad, a selection camp, and finally an international team of a handful of students. It rewards depth and originality far more than syllabus coverage — which is why it complements JEE and NEET preparation rather than competing with it.

Science Olympiads 2027 schedule
Olympiad schedules are announced separately by HBCSE and IAPT each cycle and vary by subject. The stages below are the usual sequence — registration is normally handled through your school, so check with them early rather than waiting for a public notification.
| Stage | When | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Registration through your school | Usually opens around August | Usual pattern |
| Stage 1 — IOQM / NSE exams | Usually held between September and November | Usual pattern |
| Stage 2 — INMO / INPhO / INChO | Usually held in January | Usual pattern |
| Stage 3 — OCSC selection camp | Usually held between April and June | Usual pattern |
| International Olympiads | Usually held between July and August | Usual pattern |
Who can apply
- School enrolment: You must be enrolled in a recognised school in India. Registration for Stage 1 is normally done through your school as a registered centre.
- Class: Broadly Class 8 to 12, with limits set per subject and stage. The international teams have age limits set by the international bodies.
- Progression: Each stage is a hard gate — you can only sit INMO or INPhO if you clear the qualifying round, and only attend OCSC if you clear the national Olympiad.
- Citizenship: Indian nationals studying in India. Students holding an Indian passport but studying abroad should check the specific subject's rules.
- Not a substitute for JEE or NEET: Olympiad performance does not feed into JEE or NEET admission, though several institutes recognise it and it carries real weight in international university applications.
Preparing for Science Olympiads?
Exam-pattern mocks and previous-year papers are the fastest way to find out where you actually stand.
What the paper looks like
There are no optional questions — every topic is examinable, and wrong answers cost marks.
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 — IOQM / NSE | Objective or integer-answer, 3 hours | Qualifying |
| Stage 2 — INMO / INPhO / INChO | Subjective proof and problem solving | National |
| Stage 3 — OCSC | Theory and experimental labs over 2–3 weeks | Selection |
| Stage 4 — International | Theory and practical papers | Team of 4–6 |
- Each stage gates the next
- Stage 2 onward is written proof, not multiple choice
- Experimental work is examined from Stage 3
- Depth is rewarded over syllabus coverage
- Roughly 30 students reach each selection camp
What to cover
A high-level checklist. Work through it with previous-year papers rather than reading it end to end.
Mathematics
- Number Theory
- Combinatorics
- Euclidean Geometry
- Algebra and Inequalities
- Functional Equations
Physics
- Mechanics
- Electromagnetism
- Thermodynamics
- Waves and Optics
- Modern Physics
- Experimental Physics
Chemistry
- Physical Chemistry
- Inorganic and Coordination Chemistry
- Organic Reaction Mechanisms
- Spectroscopy
- Practical and Titration work
Counseling, step by step
There is no counseling in the admissions sense — the ladder ends in team selection, not a college seat. What Olympiad training does reliably produce is problem-solving depth that makes JEE Advanced feel materially easier, which is why many students take the route even without expecting to reach the camp.
- 1
