CBSE Class 12 Boards 2027

The exam most competitive aspirants under-prepare and then regret. Board marks are a hard eligibility gate for NIT and BITS admission, and the syllabus overlaps almost entirely with JEE and NEET — which makes treating them as separate preparation the expensive mistake.

Who can apply

  • School enrolment: You must be registered through a CBSE-affiliated school. Private and correspondence candidates apply under a separate category.
  • Attendance: Schools generally require 75% attendance to permit a student to sit the board exams. Medical exemptions are considered case by case.
  • Passing: You need 33% in each subject, counting theory and practical or internal assessment together.
  • Compartment: If you fail one subject you may take a compartment exam later in the year rather than repeating the whole year.
  • Improvement: You may reappear the following year to improve your marks. This matters if you missed the 75% needed for NIT eligibility.

Counseling, step by step

There is no counseling process for the boards themselves — but your board percentage is a gate elsewhere. The 75% requirement for NIT, IIIT and GFTI admission catches out a number of students each year who focused entirely on JEE and treated the boards as a formality.

CBSE Class 12 Boards 2027 — frequently asked questions

Do board marks matter if I am targeting JEE?
Yes, and more than most aspirants assume. You need 75% in Class 12, or a place in your board's top 20 percentile, to be eligible for NIT, IIIT and GFTI admission through JoSAA — 65% for SC and ST candidates. A good JEE rank with a failed eligibility criterion is a genuinely wasted year.
How much extra preparation do boards need?
Less than students fear, if you are already preparing seriously for JEE or NEET — the syllabus overlaps almost entirely. What differs is the answer format: boards reward structured, stepwise written answers, and step marking means an incomplete solution still scores.
What are competency-based questions?
Case studies and applied-reasoning questions that test whether you can use a concept in an unfamiliar situation rather than recall it. They now carry a significant share of the paper, and they are the part that rote revision does not cover.
How important are practicals?
Usually 30 of the 100 marks in each science subject — enough to move your aggregate by several percent. They are also the easiest marks on offer, which is precisely why losing them hurts.
What if I fail one subject?
You can take a compartment exam later the same year rather than repeating the year. Clearing it gives you a valid Class 12 certificate.
Does this guide cover state boards?
No — this page describes CBSE. State boards differ in pattern, marking scheme and calendar, sometimes substantially. Check your own board's official site for its date sheet and blueprint.
